You know the story, boy meets girl at local band competition; he begins to spend a lot of time with her and before you know it, she has becomes the manager of your now doomed Sonic Youth spoof band. While most couples may have turned away from music to spend every waking moment with each other, Vinny Cafiso and Tabitha Tindale instead moved to London and became very acquainted with the local scene. There connections made it a lot easier to get their new, classic pop band noticed. On their third full-length, Joy Zipper composes ironic, complex indie pop songs inspired by Brian Wilson’s extravagant tendencies. While the music may be bubbly, the lyrics are anything but, in fact the main subject matter revolves around drug use, dying, Alzheimer’s, feeling like a mannequin and madness. The only real exception is “Christmas Song,” whose chorus is something like, “I love you more than a 1000 Christmases.” It’s kind of like the reverse of The Raveonettes, who has dark music and sugary lyrics. An overall well written and performed album that has already made noise in the U.K. and making its way to the U.S. Michael Ardaiolo
