The song was written by Neil Sedaka itself with support from Howard Greenfield. Both were also responsible for the original b-side. Sedaka recorded the song twice, in 1962 and on a smooth original ballad-like arrangement in 1975. Sedaka was identified with the song. The song was coveredmany times, by Paul Anka to Gloria Estefan and The carpenters to Tom Jones. There appeared also versions in other languages. Anna-Lena Löfgren sang Abschiednehmen is so schwer, Claude François and Sylvie Vartansang Moi pense encore à toi and La Onda Vaselina sang Qué triste es el primer adiós. There is an Italian version of Sedaka itself known under the title " Tu non los ai/Finche vivro '. For Maywood Netherlands names and Stars on 45 (in medley form) it up.
Sedaka was on the original assisted by the singers of The Cookies. Under the studiogangers were also Al Casamenti, Art Ryerson, and Charles Macy on guitar; Ernie Hayes on piano; George Duvivier on bass guitar; Gary Chester on drums; Artie Kaplan on saxophone; George Devens and Phil Kraus on percussion; Seymour Barab and Morris Stonzek on David Gulliet and celli , Joseph h.
