Review:

Probably the laziest rock criticism of 2005 was fired at DFA duet James Murphy and Tim Goldsworthy when writers accused LCD Soundsystem's fairly cohesive debut of not matching up to the accompanying disc of ne plus ultra singles. "Stick to that," it was writ, "because singles are what you're good at." Inadvertantly becoming a rabid DFA convert after seeing that band live last year, it now amuses me somewhat to see the boys have released a "first chapter" of remixes a little over a year on that dares to ask the question: Is it possible to have too much cowbell? So for all you fuckers out there who wanted "Beat Connection" nine times over, here you go... Sort of: "Mars, Arizona" is a creepy Blues Explosion remix that takes nearly eleven minutes to get through, Radio 4's best-known song (but by no means their greatest; hello, "Save Your City") is tranced-out on "Dance to the Underground," and what might be electroclash's defining remix with Fischerspooner's "Emerge" proves it's almost all here. Guess we'll have to wait for the second chapter if we want those Goldfrapp and Nine Inch Nails cuts, but for now at least, the Brooklyn block party continues. Get your payments from the nation, kids.
