Downtown is duo Bob Kaeding and Eric Brendo out of the dark clubs of New York via Detroit. They were “discovered” by a self-proclaimed “producer/engineer extraordinaire” team of Alan Moulder and some guy simply known as Flood (though melodramatic, they do have credits with the Smashing Pumpkins, U2, Nine Inch Nails and Depeche Mode). With now a strong production backing, Downtown has been able to record their first full-length Downtown on Coup de Grace records, a relatively small indie label best known for Automato. The result is a decent debut album with very cool artwork. Though the website compares them too the White Album-era Beatles and Pink Floyd, I do believe that they do not quite yet deserve those comparisons. Basically it’s a well produced guitar and drum record heavy on echoes, layering and other effects. The vocals drone along with the music, singing about what I guess are intriguing lyrics, though I am not inclined to listen to them that closely. So all and all, Downtown is an intriguing band that deserves some attention, but will also need more time to develop before they are able to hit their creative peaks. Michael Ardaiolo
