Fernando was originally no ABBA Song, but written for ABBA Member Anni-Frid. It appeared on her album "Frida ensam" from 1975. The song was written by Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Stig Anderson and had the working title "Tango".

Swedish version[Edit]Edit

The original Swedish lyrics were written by ABBA's manager Stig Anderson. These texts vary quite English version. In Swedish the Narrator tries to comfort Fernando with his broken heart, because he lost his great love is. The bittersweet chorus goes like this:

"" Long live love, our best friend, Fernando. Raise your glass and propose a toast to it, to love, Fernando. Play the melody and sing a song of happiness.Long live love, Fernando "."

English version[Edit]Edit

The English version has a rewritten text by Björn Ulvaeus. This presents a nostalgic picture of two veterans who think back to earlier, to a freedom war in which they both bid when they were younger. They refer to theRio Grande, which the war probably makes the Mexican Revolution . This began when Francisco i. Madero an army across the border from Texas led to dictator Porfirio Díaz, who was the leader of Mexico, all 34 years off.

The English text contains, uncommon for ABBA, a grammatical error in the sentence "Since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand". In standard English it would not "Since many years" but "For many years" should be.

After the great success with the song what Frida had in Scandinavia, decided to release the song as a group ABBA with an English text. It turned out to be a good move: Fernando was one of ABBA's best-selling singles, a number one hit in twelve different countries. If Frida's version, which number 1 was in Sweden, is counted, even thirteen countries, the same number as Dancing Queen would pick up later.

In the United States took out a Fernando thirteenth position, making it the highest listing previously since Waterloo. Was In the Dutch Top 40 number one hit the first Fernando for ABBA; in the National hit parade was after Waterloo the second number-one hit for the group. Fernando was 3 weeks In both charts on the first place. There were 75,000 copies sold of the single in Netherlands[1.
