Franz Eugen Helmuth Manfred Nidl, better known under the pseudonym Freddy Quinn (Hardegg27 september 1931) is an Austrian schlagersinger and actor. He was best known in the fifties and sixties of the 20th century.

In 1956 he was the first representative of West-Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest with So geht das jede Night.

With songs like the hotel buildingJunge komm bald wiederWho More Gitarre und das Unter fremden Sternen,, La PalomaDer Legionär und Heimatlos had Quinn between1956 and 1966 ten number-1-hits and he was Germany's undisputed number 1 (in total, he had 23 songs in the top ten).

His melancholy songs about come and go, to say goodbye, urge to distant lands found a large audience in post-war Germany.

Quinn also lived for a while in the United States and appeared in musicals.

With the advent of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones who conquered the German market waned the success of Quinn, he had another number one hit, but the lyrics were very critical. Although he is not big hits occur more often on television and he scored.

In 1997 he was awarded the Paul-Lincke-Ring for his extraordinary merits for the German-language entertainment music awarded.

In 2004 Quinn came in the newspapers by tax evasion (€ 900,000). He gave as his primary residence on Switzerland , but lives still prevalent in Germany was in Hamburg which he liable to tax. The Court ruled that he had to settle his debts. He got on top of a two-year suspended sentence and a fine of € 150,000.

In January 2008 passed away his wife Lily Blessmann (89 years). He had so much grief, that he himself had also no longer makes sense, as he reported in the press.
