Van Toth and Mejia's "Death to Genres" mission statement for GTA is meant to reiterate the musical diversity of their production.[2] Their debut release, It's Time, was released in 2011 on Afrojack's label, Wall Recordings. The duo performed from the Cosmic Meadow stage at Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, Nevada on June 20, 2014.[3]

Music career Edit

2010–14: Early BeginningsEdit

Van Toth and Mejia first meet through Soundcloud & Facebook, where both were making music independently. Van Toth came from a house background, while Mejia was heavily influenced by hip hop. "It's Time" was the first track the duo collaborated on as GTA, which was eventually released through Afrojack's Wall Recordings.

GTA's signature genre-crossing style developed earlier on in their careers, as the duo came from two different backgrounds. Their slogan, "Death to Genres", has been a calling card of the duo and fans alike. GTA's music is most closely associated with electro-house, but the duo pride themselves on making "just good music[4]" rather than adhering to a specific genre.[5]

GTA's first big break came when the duo got in touch with Laidback Luke, through his forums online. Laidback Luke reached out to the duo, and signed them to a publishing deal. In addition to Laidback Luke, GTA have worked with Dave Nada, Afrojack, and Diplo.[6]

GTA then released their "Booty Bounce" EP on Diplo's Mad Decent Record Label on Nov. 8th 2012.[7] The EP was made up of two tracks, Booty Bounce feat. DJ Funk, and Shake Dem. Their earlier releases helped revitalize the Miami Bass scene, and helped the duo amass a loyal following.[8]

2014–present: Hard HouseEdit

GTA's latest release "Hard House", was released on Beatport as an exclusive on June 16 and charted #1 on the Hip Hop page. "Hard House" was released on iTunes & all other DSPs on July 1, 2014. "Hard House" hit the Top 25 Beats' Dance page on July 1, day of release. GTA's latest performance was at the Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) at Las Vegas, Nevada in June 2014. An EDC recap video featuring "Hard House" has been posted on YouTube and Facebook on July 3, 2014.
