History[Edit][]

In 1962 Gerry & the pacemakers had a contract with manager Brian Epstein as a second group in addition to the Beatles. They got hits like Ferry Cross the Mersey(1964/65) and Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying (1964). The song you'll Never Walk Alone (1963) by Rodgers & Hammerstein, had made that impression on Marsden after he had seen the film Carousel in his youth, became their biggest hit. This song has been covered many times and has been the club song of Liverpool.

Their song Ferry Cross the Mersey in 1989 again reached the charts after a new version was released as a tribute to the victims of the Hillsboroughramp with the participation of artists originating from Liverpool The ChristiansHolly JohnsonPaul McCartney and Stock, Aitken & Waterman. This version remained 3 weeks at number 1 in the UK singles chart.

Gerry and the pacemakers were already years apart. The group stopped in October 1966.

Composition[Edit][]
