Oh Ike & Tina Turner, the 60s/70s version of Whitney & Bobby… or actually the other way around. The husband/wife combo that rose to immense popularity on the R&B circuit during the late 60s, early 70s was a fierce live act fronted by Tina’s exuberant growl. Ike’s upbeat, rock & soul style of music was groundbreaking at the time, and the Ike & Tina Turner Revue became somewhat of a bridge between more white-followed acts like Janis Joplin and the mostly black audience of Otis Redding. Due to marital difficulties, mostly Ike’s thirst for drugs and power, the couple broke it off in the mid-70s and went their separate ways. Ike opted for the ‘Go Straight to Jail without Collecting $200’ path, while Tina became a widely successful international solo pop star in the 80s which later resulted in her summation into simply a pair of legs. This particular disc is volume two of a three-album Saja career-spanning compilation. The biggest problem with the Turners’ career was their lack of original material, and when longer anthologies like this one are compiled you get leftover cover songs that are mostly forgettable as a whole. Not surprisingly, the best cuts on this volume are their original compositions including the funky Sit and Hold Your Hand, the sexy Baby - Get It On and When I Lost My Baby featuring some of Tina’s finest howling. In general, it’s usually safer to go with the single disc anthologies when dealing with Ike & Tina Turner, not because of their lack of talent, but again, their lack of true original material.
