I Can't Help Myself
"I Can't Help Myself", also known as "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie, Honey Bunch)", is a song by the American souland R & Bgroup The Four Tops. Along with "Reach Out, I'll Be There" this is the most successful single of the group. "I Can't Help Myself" was the first # 1 hit and The Four Tops together with "Reach Out, I'll Be There" the only one on the poplijst. On the u.s. chart hit "I Can't Help Myself" another Motown number from the top of the list, namely "Back In My Arms Again" by The Supremes. It was not only the first # 1 hit of the group in the poplijst, but also on the R & B list. In addition it was the first single by The Four Tops who reached the top 40 in the United Kingdom . Eventually remained "I Can't Help Myself" in Great Britain on # 23. The re-issue of the song from the 1970 reached # 10 in the United Kingdom.
Unlike its predecessor "Ask The Lonely", but like "Baby I Need Your Loving" was "I Can't Help Myself" written by Holland-Dozier-Holland, the songwriters trio that even though # 1 hits like "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Come See About Me" for The Supremes had written. The subject of the song is that the Narrator apologizes to his beloved for his behavior. He tells, however, that he can do nothing, because he is so terribly in love with her. The Narrator is in the version of The Four Tops lead singerLevi Stubbs. He hated the song and wanted it too does not record. Producer Brian Holland took out The Four Tops to eventually "I Can't Help Myself" yet. After the recording was made Stubbs it still a terrible number. Holland introduced him by saying that the next day would record the song once again. This happened not because Holland-Dozier-Holland was more than satisfied with that version. Finally came the single at # 1 and The Four Tops were very happy with the number.
The b-side of "I Can't Help Myself" is the song "Sad Souvenirs". In contrast to the A-side of the single is this song written by William "Mickey" Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter."Sad Souvenirs" would later be covered by, among others, The Isley Brothers and Marvin Gaye. Also "I Can't Help Myself" was covered. There are many versions of the song, in addition to those of The Four Tops. Thus, among other things also The Supremes, Dolly Parton, La Toya Jackson, The Funk Brothers and Bonnie Pointer the number included. The song was also used in the films Shark Tale and Rat Race.
