Genre DescriptionEdit

Indie-Rock is rock's little brother, who instead of growing up in their older sibling's shadow, decided that they did not need any help and went out to take on the world itself. To continue the metaphor, whatever direction that the elder rock should take musically, indie-rock well develop counteractively in response. The term came into use during the 80s, especially in the American underground counter-culture. While rock music during this time period continued to expand into a very materialistic and flashy trend, underground musicians began to venture out on their own forming independent labels and an aggressive DIY attitude. Up until the early 90s, indie-rock was virtually synomous with alternative as far as the musical stlyes were concerned. But the explosion of alternative, and most notably Nirvana, into the mainstream forced indie-rock into a new direction, which would counter-act the harsh, and usually testosterone-driven sound of the new popular style for rock. The new path was one of sensitivity, technicallity and experimentation which would be the perfect antidote to the predicatability of alternative rock. This style has remained virtually in tact today as the consenting formula of indie-rock, but because this produces such an expansive set of possibilities, it has sprout a variety of new genres that are all linked in their independent nature. It is important to note that in the current state of music the line between indie-rock and mainstream music is being continuously blurred as independent labels and bands are finding extensive popularity and financial success with the help of technology and exposure.
