Song Notes: I've seen this song referred to as an attack on organized religion, but I don't really see it. I mean, I guess it COULD be interpreted in that way, but to me, the lyrics seem to describe someone who exploited other people to get rich, but managed to become popular due to a few acts of philanthropy. Maybe there is no one right interpretation of the lyrics. I've heard tell about how John Linnell was cut off when performing this song on a Kansas radio station. - VoVat
