Nana Mouskouri (Greek: Νάνα Μούσχουρη), born Joanna Mouskouri (Greek: Ιωάννα Μούσχουρη) (Chania, October 13, 1934) is a Greek singer.

Mouskouri was born in Chania on the island of Crete, where in one and the same cinema projectionist and her father as her mother worked as an usherette . During theinvasion of Greece by nazi Germany from 1941 would be her father are part of the resistance. The family moved to Athens when Mouskouri was three. There were Mouskouri and her older sister sent to the Conservatory , where, among other things, the same Conservatory in 1938, Maria Callas was taught. Nana Mouskouri studied there from 1950 eight years classical music.

Musical career[Edit][]

Likewise seized by the jazz, with as its shining examples, among others, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, Mouskouri started[1] at the end of her study also to sing in nightclubs. In the spring of 1957 she recorded her first song, Fascination, which appeared in English as well as Greek. However, they got more fame only when she won the first prize in 1959 on the Greek Song festival, which was held for the first time in that year and from 1962 until 2008 known as the Thessalonikisong festival. The winning song was written for her by the Greek composer Manos Hatzidakis, whom she had met in 1958. A year later, in 1960, she won the first prize at the same festival again, again with music from his hand, and in 1961, she was second. In addition, to achieve the first prize in 1960 knew Mouskouri on a song contest that was held inBarcelona that year. [2]

Mouskouri's singing career went from then on prosper. In 1961 she the soundtrack of a German documentary about Greece, which culminated in the German-language single Weiße Rosen aus Athen, of which more than a million copies were sold in Germany. The song would later be translated into several languages. In 1963 went live and they represented Paris Mouskouri in Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest, where she finished eighth with A force de prier. In 1964 and 1967 Mouskouri won a Grand Prix du Disque (France's most important Prize for recordings) for the albums Knife plus belles chansons grecques and Le cœur trop tendre. In France she learned also composer-arranger and conductor Michel Legrand , who wrote two songs for her there were a hit: Les Parapluies de Cherbourg (1964) and L'Enfant au Tambour(1965), a package of The Little Drummer Boy. In the same year that its successful French-language album Le Jour où la Colombe appeared (1967), Mouskouri performed also for the first time in the oldest concert hall in Paris, the Olympia.

Her English-language records led inter alia to a tour in 1966 with the American singer Harry Belafonte, who had heard her music. Of the duo appeared that year at RCA the album An Evening With Belafonte/Mouskouri. Her LP Over & Over in 1969 was 97 weeks (almost two years) in the UK singles chart[3] and her other English-language albums sold in Great Britain and Ireland in the early 1970s very well.Concert Tours brought Mouskouri in Great Britain and Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Japan. In addition, during the same period she presented tv programmes, such as the series presenting Nana Mouskouri for the BBC (until 1976), but also in France and West Germany.

More record followed in the 1980s, including the Hispanic market has been tapped. Spain was published in 1986 in the hit single Con toda el alma (released by Philips). The subsequent album Nana Latina (1996) contained a duet with Spaniard Julio Iglesias and one with the Argentine singer Mercedes Sosa.

Mouskouri's repertoire includes music in many languages, including English, in addition to Greek, German, French and Italian, Spanish also Portuguese, Hebrew, Chinese and Dutch.

In 2006, after countless recordings and thousands of gigs, she announced to want to stop. Her farewell tour conducted by Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, South America, the United States and Canada. On 23 and 24 July 2008 gave them two farewell concerts in the ancient Odeion , packed in Athens in the presence of the Greek Prime Minister and the Mayor of the city, as well as the mayors of Berlin, Paris and Luxembourg. Despite this, published in 2011 two new CD's and on special occasions occur Mouskouri still on. So she gave a one-time concert in Berlin at the end of 2011 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the hit single Weiße Rosen aus Athen. On the occasion of her impending 80th birthday began a world tour of a year in 2013.

UNICEF[Edit][]

In October 1993, Mouskouri was appointed goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)[4] as successor of actress Audrey Hepburn, who died at the beginning of the year. Mouskouri's, among other things, good command of many languages – German, English, French, German, Greek, Italian and Spanish[4] – made it a suitable candidate for the vacancy. [5] In her new position she brought a visit to many countries, first to Mexico (1994), Chile (1995) and Viet Nam (1996) and later also to the several years before by a civil war -ravaged Bosnia and Herzegovina, where they visited a school. [6] to raise money they gave charity concerts in several countries and in February 1997 she sang along with Harry Belafonte on a UNICEF gala concert in Chicago. [7] [8]

Political career[Edit][]

In 1994, a year after her appointment at UNICEF, she became a member of the European Parliament in Strasbourg as a representative of the Christian Democratic and moderate conservative Greek party Nea Dimokratia (New democracy), which was part of the centre-right Group of the European people's Party. [9] the Greek party justified her candidacy on the grounds that Greece people with an international reputation needed to explain national positions in Europe, even though little political interest and before had Mouskouri she had to admit in an interview to know little of the Macedonian question, which in her country still sensitive. [10] its membership came to stand on her criticism. [11] In Parliament she was a member of the committees on women's rights and development and cooperation and had them under more cultural affairs in its portfolio. After five years saw them off of a second term and in 1999 she left politics, possibly because it was too heavy as a politician, her daily work[12] or because according to its all in the European Parliament to party-and power politics turned. In 2010, when her homeland in a major financial crisis, donated them "from duty minds about her homeland" its European pension (she received 25,000 euros annually) to the Greek State. [13]

Mouskouri performed twice in the marriage. She married George Petsilas In 1961, the leader and guitarist of a popular Greek trio that for years her Orchestra would be. The couple, that a son (1968) and had a daughter (1970), when Mouskouri was 39. [14] In 2003 she married André Chapelle, who had been her sound engineer when the two had each other to know not long after her divorce. [14] the couple lives alternately in Geneva and Paris. [15]

In 2007 appeared already her memoirs, entitled Memoirs in English and La fille de la chauve-souris: mémoires in French.
