The Mamas & the Papas were an American folk rock vocal group formed in Los Angeles, California. The group was comprised of four members: John Philips, Cass Elliot, Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty, with Doherty being the only Canadian in the group while the rest of them were Americans.
After Elliot decided to pursue her solo career, the group went into hiatus by the end of 1968. Due to their label, Dunhill Records, warn the group that each member would be sued for $250,000 if the group could not deliver an album by the end of 1971, John Phillips had wrote a collection of songs, depending on the availability of the other group members, though they were rarely together since the hiatus. The group's final album, People Like Us was released in November 1971. After their contractual obligations fulfilled, the group has officially disbanded.
