"The Sound of Silence" is a song by Simon & Garfunkel, that in september 1965 as a single was issued by Columbia Records. Four months later, on January 17, 1966, the song appeared on the album Sounds of Silence. As B side of the single was initially the song "we've Got a Groovey Thing goin'" is used.
The song was written by Paul Simon, and Tom Wilson was responsible for the production. On 10 March 1964, the first mix included. This recording was made using only acoustic instruments. An early acoustic version appeared as "The Sounds of Silence" on the album Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M. The different spellings were used alternately over the years.
In June 1965 Wilson decided to add electric instruments to the acoustic version. On 15 June 1965, he participated with guitarist Al Gorgoni, bassist Bob Bushnell anddrummer Bobby Gregg Gregg on the electric part he had that day. together with the song "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan included. The electric version of "The Sounds of Silence" reached in January 1966 the first place in the American Billboard Hot 100.

The Irish group The Bachelors brought in april 1966 a cover version, which the third place in the English UK Singles Chart took out.
A Dutch version under the title the sound of silence is the first lp by Boudewijn de Groot. The translation is from the hand of Lennaert Nijgh.

In the third live show of the first season of The Voice of Flanders Susan Callaghan on 17th February 2012 sang the song The sound of silence. On 20 February 2012 was the song available as a music download. A week later came the single at number two in the Flemish Ultratop 50.
