Apparently Kevin Tihista is kind of an eccentric. Though he lives three hours north of his label, Parasol has a lot of trouble with the man who doesn’t believe in communication. He has a registered web space, but no computer, refuses to answer his phone and only likes to respond with handwritten letters. After weeks of persuasion, the only artist photo they could get from him is a 1 inch by 1 inch black and white photobooth shot found in the booklet. His apparent quirkiness is even more amplified through his intricately composed, for lack of a better word, opuses. Lying somewhere between Brian Wilson and Badly Drawn Boy, Wake Up Captain, is a quirky musical gem of orchestral pop and whacked out Wayne Coyne influences. His lush voice is set aside only to slightly witty, mostly humorous lyrics, for example, “I want to know who put the drugs in my cocaine.” The truth is most of this album has a layer of cheese covering it, but that is a large part of the appeal. It almost seems as if Tihista is taking a journey through the history of pop music, and along the way, he is picking out the subtle nuances of each generation and glorifying them to their sugary supreme. This album is definitely worth giving a listen to, though you may need to take it with a grain of sugar... er.. salt. Mpardaiolo
